Stone and quartz for kitchen islands

An island is usually the largest single surface in a kitchen, seen from every side. Jumbo quartz slabs of up to 3500 × 2000 mm cover most island tops without a joint.

Long-vein designs can continue the pattern down a waterfall end. Granite is the hard-wearing natural option; marble suits owners who accept etching.

Which materials work

MaterialSuitedNote
QuartzYesStain resistant, no sealing. Slabs to 3500 × 2000 mm.
GraniteYesHard and heat tolerant. Seal once installed.
Natural marbleWith careEtches with acids. Honed hides etching better.
TerrazzoSealedNeeds a penetrating sealer. Better on floors.
Engineered marbleNoNot a worktop material.

Specifying notes

  • Thickness: 20 mm with a mitred edge for a thicker look, or 30 mm for long spans and overhangs.
  • Waterfall ends: tell us the island size and we plan the cut so the veins run from top to end.
  • Overhangs for seating need support. Your fabricator sets the limit for the chosen thickness.

Quartz or marble for a kitchen island?

Quartz suits most kitchen islands: it resists stains, food acids do not etch it and it needs no sealing. Choose marble if you accept etching.

Slab thickness: 12, 20 or 30 mm?

Use 20 mm for most worktops and walls, 30 mm for islands and spans, and 12 mm only on a solid backing. Weights, edges, overhangs and transport.
